Improving Your Smile

Are you unhappy with your smile? Would you like to change:

Your discoloured, dark or stained teeth
Your discoloured restorations
Any old unsightly crowns or bridges with visible margins
Any small gaps
Any large gaps (missing teeth)
Your crooked teeth
The size or shape, broken or chipped teeth
Your ill fitting dentures

Discoloured, dark stained teeth:

As you get older, your teeth naturally become darker. If you drink tea, coffee, red wine or consume other foods and drinks with strong colourings your teeth may become discoloured sooner. Another major cause of discolouration is smoking which can make your teeth appear yellow. Tartar build-up (a hardened form of plaque, which is formed by a film of bacteria on the surface of your teeth) can also contribute to discolouration.  We can help you by:

•

The hygienist removing the tartar build-up and staining by scaling and polishing your teeth

•

Further whitening can be achieved with the use of zoom whitening in surgery or home teeth whitening.

Discoloured restorations:
With advances in modern technology dental materials have become stronger so that it is now possible to use white fillings where in the past only amalgam was suitable, all ceramic crowns are used instead of precious metal or porcelain bonded to metal crowns.   As with everything restorations can start to show their age by becoming stained, especially around the edges.  Your restorations can still be structurally sound but their appearance may not be aesthetically pleasing.  We can help you by:

•

Changing your amalgam fillings to composite (silver to white)

•

Renewing your composite fillings

•

Fitting you with new veneers

•

Fitting you with new crowns.

Old unsightly crowns or bridges with visible margins:
Modern ceramic crowns and bridges, not only are they very strong but are very life-like as they mimic our natural tooth’s translucency; the older types of crowns and bridges made from porcelain bonded to metal do not allow light to shine through and so can appear grey and lifeless.  Also as we grow older our gums can shrink back exposing the metal margins of these old crowns and bridges.  We can help you by:

•

Changing your crowns to all ceramic

•

Changing your bridge to all ceramic

Small gaps:
The size and shape of our teeth is unique, unfortunately not everyone is happy with how their teeth have developed; they may be small or may even be missing leaving small gaps. It is quite common to have a gap in the middle of the upper front teeth; for some this is very attractive while others may find it a source of embarrassment.  We can help you by filling the gap:

•

With composite fillings

•

With veneers

•

With crowns

•

By using orthodontics

Large gaps (missing teeth):
When a tooth has become no longer viable and requires extraction it creates a gap; this may be caused by trauma, repeated infection or general wear and tear.  There are various ways to fill this gap that will provide different levels of strength and permanency; your final choice will depend on your expectations and budget.  We can help you by providing:

•

Partial denture acrylic or chrome

•

Bridge

•

Implant (we will to need refer you to an Implant Specialist to provide the initial implant treatment)

•

Orthodontic treatment – fixed or removable

Crooked teeth:
Crooked teeth not only affect the appearance of your smile but also how you chew and your ability to keep them clean.  By straightening your teeth the appearance is obviously made more pleasing but your long term oral health can be improved by allowing you to bite together correctly; also you will be able to brush and floss more effectively.  We can help you by providing the following treatments either on their own or in combination:

•

Orthodontics

•

Veneers

•

Crowns

Unhappy with size or shape, broken or chipped teeth:
Not everyone is happy with the size and shape of the teeth that they were born with, i.e. too small or too long.  Although our teeth are very strong it is all too easy to break or chip our teeth, also trauma to the tooth root can cause the tooth to darken in colour all creating the need for further dental treatment.  Depending on the severity of the damage we can help you by providing:

•

Composite fillings

•

Veneers

•

Crowns

Ill fitting dentures:
As people age, their dentures don’t change, but their mouths do. The gum ridges in your mouth can shrink and dentures become loose, causing sore spots in your mouth. Bone can also shrink; without a good supporting denture there can be changes in your jaw alignment and facial features.  If your dentures do not fit properly it not only affects your ability to chew food, adversely affecting your nutrition (avoidance of certain essential foods); it can also have a detrimental effect on your confidence especially in social settings. Making dentures to fit correctly can be a complex matter and will depend on the condition of each individual’s gums and bone structure.  We work closely with our dental laboratory technicians to provide the following treatments:

•

Reline of dentures

•

Remake of dentures

•

Implant retained dentures (we will to need refer you to an Implant Specialist to provide the initial implant treatment).
