| Your
dentist may refer you to our hygienists to assist them
to care for your oral health. This may be in the form
of a simple scale and polish to extensive periodontal
treatment and oral health education; advise on tooth
brushing and diet.
In
adults gum disease is the main reason for tooth loss,
not tooth decay. The first sign and symptom of this
is bleeding gums when brushing your teeth, and if
left will cause bone loss around the roots of the
tooth leaving it to become unstable and eventually
fall out. In the early stages all that may be required
to remedy this is advice on how to effectively clean
your teeth and gums on a daily basis. However if left
unchecked gum disease can become extensive and in
order to stabilize the situation may require deep
scaling with the use of local anaesthetic over a number
of visits to one of our hygienists.
Our
hygienists are also available to give advise to parents
and children on how best to care for their teeth.
