Dentures
What Are Dentures?
Dentures, often referred to as "false teeth," are a removable solution for replacing missing teeth. They can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or a full arch of teeth. At Bedale Dental Practice, we tailor dentures to your individual needs—focusing on comfort, stability, and a natural appearance.
What Types of Dentures Are Available?
Dentures can be classified in two main ways—by how many teeth they replace and by the material they're made from.
By Number of Teeth:
- Full (Complete) Dentures: Replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
- Partial Dentures: Replace some teeth, filling in gaps while working alongside your remaining natural teeth.
By Material:
- Acrylic Dentures: The most common type, made from a pink, gum-coloured plastic material. Lightweight and cost-effective.
- Cobalt-Chrome Dentures: Made with a metal framework for increased durability and comfort. These use remaining teeth to support and retain the denture.
- Valplast (Flexible Dentures): Also known as flexi-dentures, made from a soft, flexible material. These are lightweight, discreet, and especially comfortable for many patients.
Your dentist will walk you through the pros and cons of each material and design to find the most suitable option for your mouth and lifestyle.
What Are Implant Overdentures?
Sometimes referred to as “all-on-4” or “all-on-6”, implant-supported dentures are ideal for patients who struggle to retain or control full dentures. These dentures clip onto implants placed in the jawbone, offering vastly improved retention, stability, and comfort.
This option may be suitable if:
- You find traditional dentures uncomfortable or loose.
- You want a more fixed-feeling solution without full implant crowns.
Speak to your dentist to find out if you're a good candidate for implant overdentures.
How long do dentures last?
Dentures typically last 5–10 years, depending on wear, care, and changes to your mouth over time. Regular check-ups are essential to ensure a proper fit.
Will dentures affect how I eat and speak?
There is an adjustment period, but most people adapt within a few weeks. Implant-supported dentures can offer improved confidence and function with eating and speaking.
Can I sleep with my dentures in?
It is usually recommended to remove dentures overnight to allow your gums to rest and reduce the risk of infection or irritation.
Are dentures painful?
Dentures shouldn’t be painful. Some initial soreness or rubbing is common, but if pain persists, your dentist can adjust the fit.
How do I clean my dentures?
Clean your dentures daily with a soft brush and denture-specific cleaner. Avoid using regular toothpaste, which can be abrasive.
